Eil Whitney Technical School Teaching Core Values

"Education ought to be a process in which the whole community educates the whole community, for the whole of communal life." (author unknown). Ah, if this were only true in public education, let alone our institutions of technical education. The Eli Whitney Technical School's mission statement says they are: "To establish a safe and comprehensive learning environment where everyone is accountable, respectful, and committed to the betterment of themselves and those in the community."

The Eli Whitney Technical School is located in Hamden, Ct. Whereas the Technical Schools throughout the nation traditionally do not rank academically as high as the regular schools, all in all they have a better graduation rate, and the graduates are ready for the employment world.

Throughout Connecticut there are many quality technical programs, both vocational high school programs and technical college programs. One might say that they have interchangeable parts as they all have similar goals and sense of purpose. These can only be judged by the quality of the lives of the students who have attended their schools. If the goal of the technical school is to teach the student instead of teaching the material, then they have invented high quality citizens who will be productive, creative, contributing members of our society. It is well known that many graduates of technical schools go on to serve in our military, to serve our country in its highest calling.

It is worth mentioning that there are some other top quality schools in Connecticut that focus on the real purposes of education. Those include Platt Tech which is located in Milford, Ct. Their curriculum contains a well rounded balance between the academic such as math, English, health, social studies, etc; and the technologies such as auto technologies, electronics, hairdressing, heating and cooling, computer drafting, etc.  Nursing programs are available to Lincoln Tech's program in Hamden, which includes evening classes. Gateway Community College located in New Haven features the Blackboard Vista Distance Learning which offers online courses.

Going back to Eli Whitney's (and indeed all technical school's goals) is the statement that their life is to "ensure both student academic success" but more importantly a "zest for lifelong learning".  When one speaks to a 65 year old alumnus from Eli Whitney Technical School, if they still have a zest for learning, then Whitney, and all Technical Schools, are successful.
